Her Story
Lilian Wangũi Nyaga was born in 1923 in Mũrang'a County, Njũmbĩ, Gĩkoe, Kairi-inĩ village — the beloved third-born daughter of the late Joseph Warũĩ and the late Nancy Nyambura. She was raised in a family of seven children, growing up as a disciplined and respectful child who supported her parents with household chores and farm work.
In 1950, Lilian married the late Douglas Nyaga. Together they moved to Nyandarua, where they built their home and were blessed with six children: Stephen Maina, Nancy Nyambura, Beth Mũthoni, the late Robert Macharia, Jedidah Wairimũ, and the late Joseph Warũĩ.
She was a loving aunt to many, a devoted grandmother, and a great-grandmother — and great-great-grandmother — to many more. She was a woman of extraordinary love and strength, cherishing her siblings, children, grandchildren, and the entire community. She was peaceful and kind-hearted, bringing joy to those around her.
During her energetic years, Lilian engaged in business — buying and selling farm produce across Mũrang'a and Nyandarua. She was celebrated as a hero who fought for the freedom of our nation from the colonial government, and she remained a dedicated farmer until her later years.
On Wednesday, 22nd April 2026, Lilian spent a peaceful day with family. She mentioned she would be "going back home." At dawn on Thursday, 23rd April, at around 5:00 a.m., the Lord peacefully called His bride home. She was 103 years old.

Her Character
Often, when we speak about people, we may exaggerate or use flattering words. But today, we speak the truth. Lilian was a true example — a leader, a heroine, and a woman of great character.
She was hardworking and strong, a true queen in her own right. She deeply valued education and encouraged her children and grandchildren to pursue it diligently. She would often say, "I will come and see you as you wear that gown," expressing her desire to witness their success — words she truly meant.
Lilian was full of love. She cherished her siblings, children, grandchildren, and the entire community. She was peaceful and kind-hearted, bringing joy to those around her. She loved storytelling and humor; "Shosh" was cheerful, warm, and full of life.
Words of Love
They say it takes a village to raise a child, but for us, Grandma was the village. She didn't just give us a place to live; she gave us a foundation to stand on. Growing up under her roof meant learning the true meaning of 'tough love.' Her discipline was the greatest gift she could have given us — it shaped our character and taught us integrity. But beneath that firm hand was a heart of absolute gold. We promise to make her proud by living out the values she instilled in us.
— Lilian's GrandchildrenTo our beloved Great-Grandmother, you were the roots of our family tree, keeping us grounded while helping us reach for the sky. Though we were the youngest in your long and beautiful journey, your love for us was as fresh and vibrant as a new day. We carry your lessons of discipline and grace in our hearts. Every time we choose the right path over the easy one, we are honouring you. We will grow just as you dreamed — strong in spirit, firm in discipline, and forever grateful.
